'Zola,' Movie Based on a Viral Twitter Thread, Gets a Trailer - Watch!

Zola is coming!

The film, which was inspired by a viral Twitter thread in 2015, released its first trailer on Wednesday (March 31).

The movie is set to hit theaters on June 30, and was directed by Janicza Bravo and co-written with Jeremy O. Harris.

Here’s a plot summary: “The film centers on the dynamic between the title character, played by newcomer Taylor Paige, and Stefani (Riley Keough). It is based on a 2015 Twitter thread that took the internet by storm despite being only 148 words long. The tweets were by A’ziah King, who was then a 20-year-old Hooters waitress. She wrote about her chance encounter with a stripper and the resulting two-day Florida road-trip bacchanal involving prostitution, murder and a violent pimp known simply as Z.”

The film also stars Nicholas Braun, Ari’el Stachel and Colman Domingo.

Zola had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Taylour also starred in another recent film that is getting a lot of acclaim.

Chadwick Boseman Broke Down During An Emotional Scene in 'Ma Rainey', Co-Star Colman Domingo Recalls

Colman Domingo is remembering one of the most emotional scenes on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with the late Chadwick Boseman.

In a recent panel about the movie, Colman recalled Chadwick being so moved by the story that Cutler tells that he just stopped performing.

The scene sees Cutler, played by Colman, telling a story about what happened to a Black pastor he knew when confronted by a group of White men. In reaction, Chadwick‘s Levee goes into a full rage about life and leads him to denouncing God.

“He stops mid way of the speech, and whatever was happening there I think [co-stars] Michael [Potts], Glynn [Turman], and I, we all knew it,” Colman said. “It was one of those moments when you go, ‘This is the good stuff, and we’re all here, do not step away.’”

He continued, “Something was happening with Chad, and he turned away. I thought he was about to stop the scene, and I don’t think I’ve ever done this before in my entire career, I just said, ‘Tell me, tell me.’ I was just yelling at him. ‘Tell me! Tell me!’ Like, do not give up this scene. And then he explodes with all the rage and fury and the questions of God’s will.”

“We all just embraced each other and sobbed,” Colman shared. “All these grown men with tears in their eyes. Michael, Glynn, Chad, myself we were silent for at least a good minute and we were all trying to collect ourselves. We didn’t know what was in the room and what we were actually dealing with, what were the underpinnings of that scene. It was a whisper at first and then it was a roar.”

Colman was one of the many in the dark about Chadwick‘s cancer and says that the moment was truly a reflection of the actor and his reality.

“That man had this fight in him to the very end, and now it makes sense why he’s played so many kings in rapid succession, it’s as if he knew he didn’t have enough time on this Earth,” Colman added. “Or he wasn’t given to us for that long. But he made such an impression that I think this film seals the deal.”

For his role in the film, Chadwick will be promoted by Netflix for a posthumous recognition at the Oscars.

Chadwick sadly passed away in August from colon cancer.

Get Your First Look at Chadwick Boseman in His Final Movie, 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

Netflix has debuted the first look at the upcoming movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is the final film that Chadwick Boseman made before he tragically passed away this summer.

The movie is based on the play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson and stars Viola Davis in the title role. The film was directed by George C. Wolfe, adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and produced by Denzel Washington.

Here is the synopsis: Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Boseman) – who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry – spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.

Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige, and Dusan Brown also star in the movie.

Netflix will be releasing the film on December 18 and it’s expected to get a big awards season campaign. Many are already predicting that Chadwick will win a posthumous Oscar for his work in the movie!

Jordan Peele's 'Candyman' Looks to Be Just as Scary as 'Get Out' & 'Us' - Watch the Trailer!

It looks like Jordan Peele is going to deliver ANOTHER hit horror film! The trailer for Candyman just debuted and it does not disappoint! He wrote the film alongside Win Rosenfeld and Nia DaCosta. Nia directed the movie.

Here’s a synopsis: For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

The film will hit theaters on June 12!
