Michelle Yeoh Posts & Deletes Social Media Post Mentioning Cate Blanchett That Might Go Against Academy Rules

Michelle Yeoh is gaining attention for something she posted and deleted online, and it might have gone against the Academy rules as a nominee in the Best Actress category.

If you don’t know, Michelle is nominated as Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Now, an Instagram post from Michelle‘s account has caused some controversy.

Michelle reposted some text from an article in Vogue titled “It’s Been Over Two Decades Since We’ve Had a Non-White Best Actress Winner. Will That Change in 2023?”

The snippet of the article that she reposted mentioned fellow nominee Cate Blanchett, who is nominated for her work in Tár.

Michelle posted a portion of the article that read, “Detractors would say that Blanchett’s is the stronger performance — the acting veteran is, indisputably, incredible as the prolific conductor Lydia Tár — but it should be noted that she already has two Oscars (for best supporting actress for The Aviator in 2005, and best actress for Blue Jasmine in 2014). A third would perhaps confirm her status as an industry titan but, considering her expansive and unparalleled body of work, are we still in need of yet more confirmation?”

The text continued, “Meanwhile, for Yeoh, an Oscar would be life-changing: her name would forever be preceded by the phrase ‘Academy Award winner,’ and it should result in her getting meatier parts, after a decade of being criminally underused in Hollywood.”

Michelle has since deleted this post from her Instagram, but not before fans began seeing it.

There is an Academy rule, rule number 11, that specifically says, “any tactic that singles out ‘the competition’ by name or title is expressly forbidden.”

The rule continues, “Academy members who are found to have violated this regulation will be subject to a one-year suspension of membership for first-time violations, and expulsion for any subsequent violations.” The Academy has not addressed this as of this time.

The Oscars are set to air on Sunday (March 12).

There was another big controversy involving a different Best Actress nominee this year, too.
